GM reiterate its decision to discard Android Auto and CarPlay

GM seems to appear under fire recently with respect to its decision in order to pull the plug on Android Auto and CarPlay. The decision was made in regard to its forthcoming electric vehicles. The same has been revealed in an interview whereby the company repeats its decision. It claims, its built-in OS can do much better than those of the projection systems.

As per a discussion between The Verge with Scott Miller, the GM’s VP of the software-defined vehicle and operating systems. Since Miller certainly plays a crucial role in decision-making with respect to GM cars. This would comprise both projection systems such as Android Auto and CarPlay. Also, the company’s forthcoming efforts with Android Automotive.

Meanwhile, in response to The Verge’s forthright when asking Miller’s view on- GM’s decision was ‘terrible,’ Miller unsurprisingly disagreed. Despite this, he believes that the high demand for Android Auto and CarPlay from customers depicts that they are seeking a better infotainment experience in their cars. While he also believes that these projection-based systems are not the end.

Additionally, Miller has their viewpoint that the present loyalty to Android Auto and CarPlay can be conquered by native experience that’s even better. That’s why the company’s motive is to bring its take on Android Automotive.

I don’t think anybody would tell you that projection experience is fantastic. Right now, it’s convenient, it’s good, and compared to where we’ve been in the past, it’s been really good.

We do have customer data that says when system is embedded and it just works and you don’t have to fumble with your phone or pair it or do other things with it, you get in your vehicle and everything works seamlessly. It knows you, it recognizes you and sets it up for you. They will like that better.

Android Auto and CarPlay are removed only from GM EVs

Simultaneously, he adds that a native OS, such as GM made-to-order version of Android Automotive reaches a point of “holistic integration”  that is presently not possible with Android Auto and CarPlay. While a native OS brings information on the car’s systems. It comprises the battery as well as aims for navigation that is made for EVs. Notably, this is one of the advantages Tesla has had with its native operating system.

Moving ahead, Miller added that Android Auto and CarPlay are not vanishing completely from GM vehicles but from EVs only. On the other hand, the company’s gas-operated vehicles will tend to continue to offer both systems.
