Google Contacts feed showcasing upcoming birthdays in For you section

Reportedly, Google appended “Highlights” to Contacts in December, and it has made the Android app distinctly more than just a list of people. Therefore, the Google Contacts feed now has a “For you” section that displays upcoming birthdays.

Placing in between Favourites and Recents is the “For you” section that showcases the upcoming birthdays. While it also shows the contact’s profile picture and name, alongside the date and a countdown to it. Simultaneously, it is also given shortcuts to Call or Text.

Notably, this is much alike what Messages already does. Whereas, you might also be familiar with Google Assistant notifications that have the same purpose.

At the same time, it’s one of the nice capabilities to have but not crucial. This could be said of the Highlights tab in general. On the other hand, we’re caught sight of this, live with version 4.2 of Google Contacts. Although it might have rolled out earlier.

Furthermore, in a related development, we freshly got an in-app survey for the feature. Alongside, Google asks “how helpful are Highlights for finding and connecting with people easily.” Here, it intends to know which aspect you find most helpful. The same comprises Viewed recently, For you, Favorites, and Added recently.

In conclusion, Google asks “what else would you find help in Highlights?” The feature comes in the use more since last year. Whereas, it appears like recently added contacts can be useful at times.

9to5Google’s Take

Google has definitely emerged from a list of contacts to an app that let’s allow you to “Fix & manage” and now tries to be proactive. While the core list performance is eventually not affected by the addition of Highlights.

Apparently, it is quite interesting to notice that Google adds even more functionality ahead of time. If you look, then there are shades of Google Now/Assistant Snapshot in what Google Contacts is doing here.
