Korean Companies gaining surge in North American EV Battery Market

The total amount of battery energy of EVs registered in North America is 56.4 gigawatt hours (GWh).

Reportedly LG Energy Solution has ranked second place in the North American EV battery (Electric vehicle ) market. While the sale of SK On and Samsung SDI batteries has substantially increased.

In addition to this, the total amount of battery energy of EVs registered in North America is 56.4 gigawatt hours (GWh). This record is from January to October. And that’s up by 61 percent from the same month of last year, depicted by SNE Research. In contrast, EV battery usage has climbed instead of adverse effects of the factors like Russia-Ukraine war and a shortage of automotive semiconductors.

Furthermore, Japan’s Panasonic comes first in North America till October of this year. This usage records a cumulative battery usage of 27.1GWh, an increase of 25 percent from the same month of 2021. Whereas, this accounted for 48 percent of the North American battery market respectively. On the other hand, Panasonic ranked fourth in the global market capturing a share of 7.9 percent.

LG Energy Solution placed second with battery consumption of 10.1GWh, which is a 24 percent increase from the same month of the last year. Also, the Korean battery giant ranked second in the global market by having a share of 13.8 percent. This is resultant of the strong sales of the Ford Mustang, the GM Volt, and the Volkswagen ID.4, as reported by analysts.

China’s CATL was able to come in third place which records a cumulative battery usage of 7.6GWh in October. This increase of up 431 percent from a year earlier. This is because the increase in sales of the Tesla Model 3 made in China had an impact on the ranking of CATL.

Meanwhile SK On ranked Fourth place by having a consumption of 5.4GWh. That’s come out to be a 646 percent increase in battery usage. While the Samsung SDI ranked fifth with 4.5GWh respectively.

“Out of the 56.4GWh of battery use in North America from January to October in 2022, batteries installed in Tesla cars totaled 33.1GWh, accounting for 58.6 percent,” SNE Research said. “We need to pay attention to the supply chain diversification strategies of the three Korean battery makers, who supply batteries mainly to Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen and GM, as it remains to be seen whether they will be able to maintain their high growth rate in North America or Panasonic and CATL, which supply batteries to Tesla, will dominate the North American market.”
