Samsung is expected to use more Sony camera sensors in its smartphones in the future. Sony Semiconductor Solutions, the maker of Sony camera sensors, plans to move some of its camera sensor production lines from Japan to South Korea, allegedly to expand and strengthen sensor supply to Samsung.
Reportedly the new camera image sensor chip wafers will be shipped from Japan to South Korea where they will be packaged and cut into individual chips.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s mobile division (MX division) is encouraging internal competition and plans to mix sensors produced by the System LSI division with Sony’s products in its smartphones.
For your information, Sony currently occupies more than 50% of the global mobile camera sensor market, far ahead of second-ranked Samsung (10%).
