Samsung SDI: 46 mm diameter batteries will be ready for mass production by early 2025

Samsung SDI President Choi Yoon-ho officially announced that “46 mm diameter batteries will be sufficiently ready for mass production by early 2025,” and the exact timing will be adjusted according to customer needs.

The statement was officially made publically at the largest battery exhibition in South Korea held in COEX, Gangnam, Seoul.

The 46 mm cylindrical battery represents a next-generation product with five times the capacity and six times the output compared to existing 21700 (21 mm diameter, 70 mm height) batteries.

Apart from the above, Samsung’s SDI battery-making unit has also announced that it will start mass production of solid state batteries in 2027, and that the parts it pushes will have energy density of 900 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L), a figure lithium-ion batteries struggle to match.

Solid state batteries are also more resilient than lithium-ion affairs, which become less efficient over time and can also catch fire after even slight damage. Toyota said the product expansion will allow it “to respond flexibly to growing battery demand, while also helping to further boost mass-production competitiveness.”
