Samsung C&T confirmed its participation in a SMR project in Romania

Samsung C&T has officially announced its involvement in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project in Romania. Recently, Samsung C&T’s construction division signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nuclearelectrica, Romania’s state-owned power corporation; E-INFRA; Nova Power & Gas; and U.S.-based companies NuScale Power and Fluor to jointly develop a 462 MW SMR in Romania.

The all new ambitious venture aims to replace existing thermal power plants in Romania’s Dobresti region with cutting-edge SMR technology provided by NuScale. For your information, this project is scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2029.

On June 13, the signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding (MOU) witnessed the participation of top executives from each organization. They unanimously agreed to combine their expertise and resources throughout all stages of the project, including planning, licensing, design, engineering, procurement, construction, and financing. In addition to Samsung C&T, the other five companies committed to actively collaborating to expand the NuScale technology-based SMR industry in Europe and other global markets, with a focal point in Romania.

Samsung C&T, having invested $70 million in NuScale Power, is striving to establish a prominent position in the next-generation nuclear technology market through SMRs. Leveraging this partnership, the company is actively engaged in expanding the global NuScale SMR enterprise, including in Eastern Europe and Asia.
