Samsung SDI is moving forward with Stacking technology

Samsung SDI is a battery and electronic materials manufacturing division of Samsung. While it is contemplating associating with a Chinese company in regard to a new method for small batteries. The same comprises smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This new method is mainly based on ‘stacking’ technology, it stacks the inner materials of the battery layer by layer like a step.

Stacking was first implemented in electric vehicle batteries including the 5th generation. Whereas, the small batteries are also in a full-swing mode in terms of research and development. Whereby, increasing the energy density will subsequently extend the battery life.

As per the recent report, Samsung SDI takes into consideration a Chinese equipment company for the additive-making process. The same is used in the small pouch-type battery production line at the Cheonan site. While the performance evaluation is in progress for two companies. This includes Company A and Company B in China. On the other hand, the competing domestic companies Company C and Company D, seem to be not considered. Apparently, the Chinese equipment is in the process of creating domestic subsidiaries in order to support Samsung SDI.

The stacking process can substantially enhance the energy density

Until now, the Samsung SDI has tended to produce only winding types of batteries. Of which the small batteries are woven with jelly roll material. In the early days, small and large batteries are also used for jelly rolls. Notably, in 2020, the stacking method of stacking anode, cathode, and separator layer by layer came into existence first time for small batteries.

Since the stacking process can substantially enhance the energy density which is by more than 10%. On the other hand, Samsung SDI plans to fasten its efforts, in order to focus on various major smartphone companies. This comprises key customers of Samsung Electronics, with this new small battery method.
