Android 14 Beta 1: Seems to acquire a “transparent” navigation bar on all apps

On-screen navigation has significantly done a great job that substantially enabling earlier Android versions unique. As time has moved further, new features have emerged. While in Android 14 Beta 1, Google finally took the long pending complaints into consideration. Since it seems to acquire a “transparent” navigation bar.

For a couple of years now, the Android navigation bar has held the tendency to change its color by matching the app on the screen. Either would be completely transparent, showing content present “behind” the navigation buttons or gesture bar. While, in many cases, there are apps that simply depict the default space around the buttons or gesture bar. This tends to be annoying sometimes.

Android 14 Beta 1, Google has come up with a new developer option that enables a “transparent navigation bar” across the platform. This allows all the apps to change the color to match the app itself. Whereas, Google calls this a “transparent” bar and explains it as:

Make navigation bar background color transparent by default

In order to apply the changes, tap on the setting: (Settings > System > Developer Options > Transparent navigation bar). It will make the navigation bar to be transparent on the system level. Whereas most apps already lack this functionality, there it simply matches the background color of the app. Also, it is assumed that the app is behave this way when a particular app is not designed to render edge-to-edge.

With respect to Android 14 Beta 1, these settings don’t seem to work faithfully. Although, we were able to see it in action on the Fitbit app’s “Readiness” page. This mostly defaults to a black bar including of Sam’s Club app and UPS app. All these apps mostly have a black bar at the bottom along with a white app interface. But, this setting turns it white on all three.

Also, at this point in time, it is not clear that Google will carry this feature with its final release of Android 14. But we really hope to have a true transparent navigation bar as a final outcome.
