Samsung Display finally starts OLED development for Apple 13.3-inch MacBook Air

Samsung Display has begun the development of OLED for the Apple 13.3-inch MacBook Air. The launch date of the official Apple MacBook Air is yet to be available. Currently, LG Display is working on iPads and as reported by TheElec, Samsung Display is the only company developing OLED for MacBook Air for now. Apple will use this OLED in the MacBook Air for the first time following the iPad Pro lineup.

LG Display is currently developing both 11-inch and 13-inch iPad OLEDs that Apple plans to release next year, so it lacks production capacity to develop additional models. Right now, Samsung Display is only developing an 11-inch model out of two iPad OLED models to be released next year. The same work for the 10.86-inch OLED was suspended by Samsung Display in September 2021 due to Apple’s demand and price.

All OLEDs for IT products, including the OLED iPad that Apple will release next year, apply so-called ‘hybrid OLED’ that applies thin film encapsulation (TFE) to a glass substrate. In addition, the iPad OLED to be released next year will apply the Two Stack Tandem method of stacking two light emitting layers, but the OLED for MacBook Air currently being developed by Samsung Display is likely to adopt the single stack method.
