Gaming: Samsung Experts Explain Ray Tracing for the Galaxy S23 Series

Ray Tracing technology on the Galaxy S23

In this era of technology where technology plays a vital role in every aspect of our lives. Smartphones become a necessity now, and with the increase in technology. The popularity of high-end mobile gaming phones in the mainstream gaming market is also increased. With the effectiveness in the PC and console games with the superb graphics on their mobile devices. The same approach the expectations for smartphone gaming performance.

Notably, the Galaxy S23 series is the most recent flagship smartphone in the Samsung lineup. It housed the best and most powerful GPU, which improve its performance by 41% with respect to the previous version. Out of this enhancement, Ray Tracing provides true-to-life lightning to the mobile gaming world.

In order to bring more about Ray Tracing, here in this article, we bring more about it, on the basis of a discussion with Samsung experts.

Ray Tracing: Level Up Your Gaming Experience

Ray Tracing is the newest rendering method that demonstrates graphic effects in real time by tracing rays of light. Additionally, the Galaxy S23 series GPU is packed with specially built hardware, in order to accelerate these ray tracing simulations, which is very similar to a desktop GPU. This exhibits shadows and light reflections in mobile games in a much more realistic way.

Jungwoo Kim, who lead the GPU development for the Galaxy S23 series purported that Ray racing technology is “the ultimate graphic rendering method.”

“Ray Tracing is a complex simulation that traces how the optic nerve of an eye receives a ray of light after being reflected, refracted, or diffracted by an object,” said Kim. “It’s very similar to how light is actually processed.”

Moving ahead with the Joonyong Park review, since he is responsible for GPU technical support and both internal and external responsibilities for this new product.

“The previous rasterization technique is limited, resulting in awkward and inaccurate expressions.”

Bridging the Gap Between Desktop and Mobile Graphics With the Galaxy S23 Series

With the consistency in technology enhancement, Samsung Electronics since 2010, has put its focus on breaking down the restrictions between console, desktop, and mobile experiences. This is done by stretching the performance and range of its graphics API. Also, the company has a seamless association with major industry players.

“In 2016, we standardized the next-generation graphics API called Vulkan released by the Khronos Group and succeeded in commercialization through the Galaxy S7,” said Kim. “But, we’ve been working on advanced GPU development with partners like Epic Games and Unity to optimize the performance of Android games since 2015, before Vulkan was integrated into Galaxy devices. The optimization code we acquired by working together was provided to game developers first and made the successful case for Vulkan and engine optimization. The achievement was presented at various developer conferences.”

Multi-Player Collaboration Driving Mobile Performance

Alternatively, the developers cooperated with Samsung R&D Institute Ukraine (SRUKR). And apart from this, several partner companies, the same comprises of Epic Games, the developer of Unreal Engine, prepare the best graphics.

While Kim described that the demo contents introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 were a team effort. To add further he stated:

“This is an area that we’ve been working on in collaboration with a game engine developer and game developers,” said Kim. “We kept making various attempts for efficient rendering. As a result, we were able to overcome challenges by reducing the number of computations while maintaining the same level of quality.”

Galaxy S23 Series brings a New Paradigm for Mobile Gaming

Apparently, the mobile games that bring support for Ray Tracing aren’t available in the market as of now. At the same time, if the gamer’s company demonstrates its interest in new mobile GPU technology, then they are welcome. This statement has been stated by Park, on the future of mobile gaming performance.

Park said, that they were “working very hard to apply Ray Tracing technology to more mobile games.”

“Ray Tracing technology is now only starting to go mobile. Since Samsung has been researching and preparing this technology for a long time, our company will lead the industry and quickly expand this technology,” said Kim. “Our next goal is to find the optimal method to apply Ray Tracing in many mobile devices and provide a great gaming experience to the users.”
