Well, Samsung’s Galaxy A series is termed as the perfect pick by the one who really is not interested in investing so much money in smartphones, as the Galaxy A series consists of the best Android devices in the middle ground since it’s much more affordable without having too many compromises.
The Galaxy A52 and A53 were both very well-received, and in 2023, Samsung is looking to replicate that success with the Galaxy A54. Let’s check out some of the best features of the handset and see why this mid-range series makes for such a great deal.
1. New S23-Like Design
Talking about the design of the Samsung Galaxy A54 is a new premium-looking design that makes it look almost identical to the flagship Galaxy S23 series. There are two main changes here: first, the corners of the device are now slightly more rounded, and second, the back of the device now has three individual camera rings protruding outwards instead of a rectangular camera island.
Though has unfortunately been achieved by thickening the side bezels instead of reducing the bottom chin bezels on the front of the device now look more symmetrical.
2. New Color Options
Black and white are standard colors for any smartphone, but the Galaxy A54 also introduces two more interesting colorways: The Awesome Violet option on the A54 looks similar to the exclusive Bora Purple colorway we saw on the Galaxy S22—perfect for those who want a more showy look!
Also, Awesome Lime and Awesome Violet. This is a welcome addition because Lime is one of the exclusive colorways in the Galaxy S23 series.
3. New 50MP Main Camera
At prior, Galaxy A54’s predecessor Galaxy A53 has a quad-camera setup with a 64MP main shooter whereas Galaxy A54’s camera system is a downgrade since it has three rear cameras with a 50MP main shooter. However, know that when it comes to budget and mid-range phones, “quad-camera setup” is a marketing gimmick. By ditching the frankly pointless 5MP depth camera, Samsung can focus more on improving the main, ultrawide, and macro cameras.
Also, note that it’s unclear whether the 50MP lens on the A54 is the same as the 50MP lens on the base Galaxy S23. As far as resolution is concerned, more pixels don’t necessarily mean better photos. Since most people take photos using the default 12MP mode anyway, this minor dip in resolution shouldn’t affect you much.
So, the focus this time around should be more on improving image processing, especially for nighttime shots, and that’s exactly what Samsung seems to have done with the Galaxy A54. The Galaxy A53 already takes pretty decent photos with the camera hardware it has.
Samsung also claims to have improved Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Video Digital Image Stabilization (VDIS), but that’s something reviews will be able to judge better.
4. New Exynos 1380 Chip
Samsung has discontinued its in-house Exynos chips for the flagship Galaxy S lineup, but the mid-range Galaxy A lineup will continue to use them. This isn’t a big deal for the average user since the Exynos 1380 packs more than enough punch to fulfill your everyday needs. On AnTuTu (v9), the Exynos 1380-powered Galaxy A54 is expected to score more than 500K, packing a near 30% improvement over its predecessor the Galaxy A53 which only managed to clock an overall score of 379,313.
To give you some perspective, the 5nm Exynos 1380 chip inside the Galaxy A54 should offer similar CPU speeds and more efficiency but a slightly inferior gaming performance than the 6nm Snapdragon 778G+ chip inside the Nothing Phone.
5. Expandable Storage
The Galaxy A53 neither had a headphone jack nor came with a charger in the box, so we assumed the next feature Samsung would remove would be the microSD card slot. Flagships got rid of all these features a while ago, and now many mid-range phones are following suit. Thankfully, the Galaxy A54 still comes with a microSD card slot.
This is a big deal for value-conscious buyers because an additional 128GB of internal storage usually adds about $100 to the price of a phone, but a microSD card of the same capacity costs less than $20. To be fair, 128GB is enough for most people, but it’s great to have the option to expand your storage later on.
6. Excellent Battery Life
The Galaxy A54 comes with a 5000mAh cell which is pretty standard for an Android phone these days. But what’s perhaps more exciting is that since the FHD display and the Exynos 1380 chip are not power-hungry (unlike QHD displays and some flagship chips), the device should be able to last up to two days on moderate use.
Unfortunately, the charging speed is still capped at 25W, and no, there’s no charger in the box.
7. Upgradable to Android 17
The Galaxy A54 comes with Android 13 out of the box, wearing the One UI 5 skin. Just like the flagships, the A54 will get four years of major Android updates, so that should take the handset all the way to Android 17 which is scheduled for 2026.
OnePlus now promises four years of OS updates too but only for its flagships; Samsung remains the only Android maker that offers it for its mid-range phones as well. If you’re planning to use your phone for a long time, the Galaxy A54 is a compelling mid-ranger.
Great Design, Good Specs, Decent Price
The Galaxy A54 ticks all the right boxes and doesn’t have any obvious flaws, which should make it a safe choice against other, more adventurous Android mid-rangers. If you already own the Galaxy A53, you can skip the A54.
There’s a lot to like about the Galaxy A54 including the new design, new chip, improved main camera, microSD card slot, four years of updates, and excellent battery life. For the first time ever, owning a Galaxy A phone is not just about utility, but also vogue.
