Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Water Drop Hinge

Samsung has finally started the reliability test of a waterdrop-shaped hinge for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 foldable phone. The fifth-generation foldable phones are expected to be released in the second half of the year.

According to the latest report, Samsung will finalize the hinge concept after a month of testing. It will be the first time the South Korean tech giant will use waterdrop-shaped hinge. Once the final concept is confirmed, parts production is expected to begin in May at the earliest through KH Vatech.

A teardrop-shaped or droplet hinge is a type of hinge that supports both screens in close contact when a foldable product is folded and minimizes wrinkles where the product is folded. As the axis related to the hinge moves, the part where the product folds is rolled round, so it is called a water drop type hinge.

To recall, at CES 2023 a prototype displaying the new hing gives us our first idea of what to expect in a much thinner. Galaxy Z Fold 5 hinge area thickness target within 14 mm. The thickness of the previous Galaxy Z Fold 4 hinge area is 15.8 mm.

Samsung Electronics is expected to carry out a folding test, including 200,000 basic and 300,000 limit tests, over the next month. When the product is folded 200,000 times, the strength of the foldable panel must be maintained within 15% of the initial value to be evaluated as durable. It takes 4 to 5 days to conduct the 200,000 folding test. Earlier reports have also pinned down the Galaxy Z Fold 5 as coming with the long-awaited S Pen.
