Android 14 may bring Google Play data safety section

Since, there's no other substitute that informs the user when an app's data safety info has changed.

Android 14

There’s always a pop-up in order to grant permissions an app requests before installing it via a Google Play store. While it has always been up to developers in order to tell you the need for those permissions. This information can’t be changed with the launch of Google Play’s data safety section. Since the information are rely on what the developer discloses. On the other hand, the majority of the user misses it, as mentioned on an app’s Play Store listing. Also, there’s no other substitute that informs the user when an app’s data safety info has changed. Luckily, Google’s preparing a way to sort these problems in Android 14.

In Google’s own words, Google Play’s data safety section “provides users with a simplified view of how an app collects, shares, and secures user data.”

Additionally, Google discloses the data safety section during I/O 2021. At the same time open up the Play Console for developers in order to submit info after some time. Also, the data safety section launched in April 2022, while the developers could fill out the form until August 2022. At the same time, all new apps and app updates presented to Google Play after August 2022, must comprise the completed data safety form. It indicates that developers need to really keenly think about every feature of their apps and also the data they collect.

In Android 14 DP1, this allows a new “data privacy” section in the “location permission” page for various apps. This is displayed at the time when the app reports that it collects location data. Here the text mentions that “your location may be shared” as “this app declared it may share your location with third parties.” While tapping on the text display the dialog, which discloses the reason for an app to collect the data.

The feature may not be available on Android Automotive, Wear OS, or Android TV/Google TV

Notably, this dialog can also be opened from the permission prompt, that granting an app location access. Above the same, there’s new text that states, “this app stated it may share location data with third parties.” Whereas, tapping this text opens the same dialog as earlier.

Moving ahead another bite of info, regarding this feature is that it probably may not be available on Android Automotive, Wear OS, or Android TV/Google TV. There may be certain codes that scan if the device is running any of the mentioned flavors of Android. And if so, logs that the “data sharing updates” feature is unavailable.

Talking about “data sharing updates”, then it is noted here that this is a new settings page. It can be found under Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy, and it allows you  to “review apps that changed the way they share location data.” Here, you can review when an app’s data-sharing information has been modified following an app update.
