Reportedly, Android 14 probably come up with a new feature that enables you to tell apps priorly about your regional preferences. This makes your personalized experiences even better. Since Android is running on literally billions of devices around the globe. Therefore, it is quite essential for the platform to be localized in order to cater to all sorts of users.
While AOSP provides adequate support for a wide variety of languages out of the box. Also, apps can easily able to recognize what language they support by providing resource files. Since a lot of users are bilingual, thus they intend to use one or multiple apps in a specific language without making system-wide changes.
Notably, this was not the case till Android 13, although users were able to set language preferences on per app basis. The feature is notably a good one but there is more to consider when it comes to localization. It includes temperature units, calendar type, the first day of the week, and the number system. While it derives the things based on the locale that they set. It means, if users set their preferred language to English then they certainly want to see the temperature in Fahrenheit.
Here, things become a little bit typical, when users from America moved to the UK or anywhere else, that is used to Celsius. Therefore, it’s not always the case to use only a specific format. Since there are millions of users out there, they simply want to use mix and match their settings. Therefore, it clearly depicts that users want to simply change their settings as per their preferences. Thus, by analyzing the user’s needs, Google added the per-app language feature in Android 13.
Meanwhile, in Android 14, Google appears to be extending this logic to more places. As a part of the same, the company is testing a new “regional preferences” feature in Android 14. With the help of the same, users are able to set their preferred temperature units, calendar, the first day of the week, and the number system for each locale. In order to find the “Regional preferences” then it appears under Settings > System > Languages & input.
You can use the feature to “let apps know your regional preferences so they can personalize your experience.” On each subpage, there’s a note that says, “apps will use your regional preferences where possible.”
