Satellite Connectivity: Samsung will jump in when the timing is right and the technology is ready – Roh

We didn't hear any single piece of info regarding satellite communication during the recent Galaxy Unpacked.

Satellite Connectivity

By the end of last year, we often tend to listen that Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series could bring support for a kind of Satellite Communication service. While the news was never confirmed, many have their concrete notions that it was coming. Since Qualcomm’s announcement during CES 2023. As it disclose that it will be going to launch a satellite-based two-way communication system, fitted in smartphones with its top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. But recently during the Unpacked event of Samsung Galaxy S23. We didn’t hear any single piece of info regarding satellite communication. Now to answer and to break multiple doubts, we have TM Roh, Samsung’s President and Head of Mobile Experience Business chimed in.

As per Roh, while spoking with CNET, Samsung understands the significance of a feature like satellite communication and connectivity. Alternatively, also said that the functionality at this point is quite limited. In addition to this, it looks like Samsung will jump in when the timing is appropriate and the technology is all set to use.

Apparently, this is sound thinking and Roh has a point. Samsung has been known to release devices that have the “everything but the kitchen sink” methodology. That features every possible aspect that anybody can think of from a smartphone and its software.

Apple, the sole smartphone maker that offers satellite communication

Reportedly, it appears like Apple will be the sole smartphone maker that will offer satellite communication. Since iPhones and Apple Watches can able to communicate using satellites, also the feature is quite limited. At the same time, things could probably change dramatically by the end of the year. As companies like Qualcomm and even T-Mobile affirm to provide satellite coverage to their customers. Notably, the latter doing so in partnership with SpaceX.

Furthermore, as far as Android devices are concerned. We’ve seen support being offered. Also, Google’s senior vice president of Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, was at Galaxy Unpacked. Since he shared in the past that the company was designing and working on the next iteration of Android with support for satellites. Whereas all of this is quite exciting to see what smartphones will offer satellite communication in the latter part of the year. However, Samsung will introduce the feature with its more premium foldable smartphones sometime in the summer.
