Nokia signs 5G patent deal with Samsung

Nokia, a Finnish manufacturer of telecom equipment, announced on Monday that it had renewed a multi-year agreement with Samsung to license its 5G patents after the previous agreement expired in December.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the agreement, but Samsung began making payments to Nokia on January 1, 2023.

A dispute that hurt its quarterly revenue was resolved when Ericsson, a Nordic rival, and Samsung reached an agreement on 5G patents last year.

Over 4,500 patent families have been identified as essential to 5G, making up approximately 20,000 patent families in Nokia’s patent portfolio.
