Samsung has started to commercialize MicroLED technology for smartwatches according to a recent report out of South Korea…!!
The former tendency of Samsung MicroLED technology was authentically in use for the company’s high-end TVs. But from now they indulge the same for smartwatches.
Currently, Samsung’s Galaxy Watches are using OLED displays. OLED panels are the same display panel that the company supplies to other manufacturers. Commercialization of its MicroLED tech will result in future Galaxy Watch models featuring these advanced panels.
Future Samsung watches may feature MicroLED panels
Samsung counter at the top suppliers of OLED panels for the Apple Watch. As the news occurs in the industry we have also published an article on ‘Apple Inc. is planning to start using its own custom displays on mobile devices as early as 2024′. And the plans start with Apple’s desire to shift its smartwatch to MicroLED. This could result in the company not buying as many OLED panels from Samsung as it currently does. By becoming a supplier of MicroLED panels for smartwatches, Samsung Display can ensure that it retains Apple as a customer.
MicroLED panels are brighter, have a better contrast ratio, and have excellent color reproduction in comparison to OLED. Visibility is a lot better under direct sunlight. MicroLED panels are also more power efficient, thus enabling smartwatches to extend their battery life. If expectations turn true surely the MicroLED panels will offer significant improvements over OLED.
Samsung wants to live on its project soon, therefore at the end of last year, Samsung Display established a new team to work on this project. The team’s objective is to achieve commercialization of this technology in the near future. It’s going to be a lengthy process, though, and Samsung Display hopes to complete the development within this year.
If it’s able to do that, Samsung Display will be in a good position to meet the demand for premium smartwatches from both Samsung and Apple.
