Samsung SDI to invest in a battery plant for BMW in Hungary

Samsung SDI has made up its absolute mind to invest in a battery plant exclusively for BMW in Hungary. Just a week ago chairman Lee Jae-Yong met Oliver Zipse, chairman of Samsung Electronics, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in the field of electric vehicles.

Samsung shook the same for the development project with BMW in 2009 and has maintained a cooperative relationship for 14 years. The next-generation battery products such as all-solid-state will reflect the deepening relationship between the two companies.

Industries reflect on the 9th, Samsung SDI is said to be promoting a new plant in Hungary (commonly known as Plant 3). It is expected to be built near the existing factory in the Goed area. The cathode ray tube (CRT) and plasma display panel (PDP) factories were converted to batteries in 2016. Since 2019, investors for the second plant have been in the process.

The new factory is expected to be prepared across the road passing the existing factories 1 and 2. Procedures such as land purchases were also carried out. The foundation work can be done in the first half of the year. The specific investment amount was not disclosed. If it is carried out with an investment of the size of the existing 2nd factory, it is likely to be worth 1 trillion won. In this case, 12 million cells per month can be produced on 15 to 20 production lines.

A new prismatic battery is to be produced. This is described somewhat existing 5th generation (Zen 5) battery, the height is lowered and the left and right lengths are increased. If the existing battery had a height of 90 to 100 mm, the new battery is around 60 mm. In the battery industry, it is often referred to as a ‘Low Height Prismatic Cell’. The positive and negative terminals were also changed from the top to the left and right.

The height of a module that bundles multiple battery cells and a battery pack that combines these modules can be drastically lowered. BMW aims to make the 160mm tall battery pack 100mm inside.

Some rumors were alarming about the new battery being designed to meet the specifications requested by BMW. A pouch-type battery has also been tried in the same form. The ‘U’ type with positive and negative terminals at the top was changed to the left and right to the ‘T’ shape. It is an ‘ultra-long cell’ with an increased battery cell length. It is interpreted as an attempt to improve the driving performance of electric vehicles by lowering the center of gravity and increasing energy density.

The composition of cathode and anode materials is also expected to change. High-nickel with a nickel content of 90% is expected to be applied to the anode material, and the new ‘SCN’ (Si-Carbon-Nanocomposite) with a silicon content of 10% is expected to be applied to the anode material. The battery assembly process utilizes stacking technology, which stacks battery materials such as cathode materials, electrolytes, separators, and anode materials in layers like stairs. The energy density can be increased once more by material compression technology.

Samsung SDI’s partners are also anticipated to business fragrance. Currently, notching and stacking equipment for making anode and cathode tabs is being supplied by Fill Energy. MOT is in charge of assembly process equipment such as jelly roll insertion and the battery can (CAN) and cap (CAP) welding.
