Samsung Electronics plans to launch 3D ToF X-ray by next year

The image sensor, which is the core of the ToF module is developed by Sony in Japan. 

Reportedly Samsung Electronics introduced an X-ray device with 3D ToF. It is added by three-dimensional depth information, in order to expect three-dimensional X-rays. While the production of the same going to initiate in the first half of coming year.

As per the industry news revealed recently, it is being noticed that Samsung Electronics’ medical device division plans to launch an X-ray device. It is powered by 3D Time of Flight (ToF). Also, the image sensor, which is the core of the ToF module is developed by Sony in Japan.

ToF at glance

Talking about ToF, then it’s a technology that calculates the distance by measuring the time when a light source sent towards an object is reflected and returned. ToF comprises the transmitter that discharges light and a receiver that receives the reflected light. While ToF has been installed in Samsung’s flagship devices such as the Galaxy S and Note in the past. Although it has not been applied since it is judged to be not that effective.

Furthermore, this is the first time that Samsung Electronics’ medical device business division will be going to launch an X-ray with ToF. Thereby using this module, the thickness can be measured, and depth information as well. Parallelly, it enables three-dimensional information such as shape, volume, and density from the thickness of bones and soft tissues. Therefore, it increases imaging precision as compared to conventional X-rays. While it also lowers the number of X-rays which reduces the patient’s exposure to radiation.

The company’s medical device unit plans to launch an X-ray device with a ToF module by next year. Apart from this, the overall appearance of the division has been diminishing. Notably, the head of the medical device business also faces degradation as his position lowers from President level to vice president in 2020.

On the other hand, Samsung Medison, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics is focusing on the ultrasound diagnostic device business. Presently, Samsung Group’s medical device business is assist by Samsung Electronics Medical Device Division and Samsung Medison. In addiotn to this, both of these divsions share the brand samsung Healthcare.
