Samsung Electronics recommence Technology-sharing Agreement with Huawei

Samsung Electronics transferred 98 patents, it carried in the United States to Huawei in November 2022.

Samsung Electronics has recently renewed a technology-sharing agreement with Huawei, according to media reports. Samsung Electronics has latterly recommenced a technology-sharing agreement with Huawei.

The news reveals as per the media reports by The Elec, a Korean online media. According to the same, Samsung Electronics transferred 98 patents, it carried in the United States to Huawei in November 2022. Whereas, the value of these transferred patents is predicted to be equal to the difference in their cross-licensing agreement.

Furthermore, Samsung assigned nearly 81 patents to Huawei in 2019 which is also under a cross-licensing deal. This has been done, in order to put an end to ongoing patent disputes.

Alan Fan, the head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department. He stated in a press briefing that Samsung is Huawei’s major licensee out of foreign companies. This is in terms of the number of devices sold and the patents covered.

Huawei has patent cross-licensing deals with nearly 20 companies. It includes Chinese and foreign players. While the licensee includes Oppo, which is the world’s fourth-largest smartphone maker by shipments. Notably, the deal with Oppo is considered Huawei’s largest ever with a Chinese company.

According to Nikkei Asia, Huawei is speculated to expand revenue from patent licensing. Since the company stated its revenue from patent licensing was between US$1.2 billion and US$1.3 billion from 2019 through 2021.

Huawei, in 2016 filed a patent infringement in US and China. Which alleges that Samsung used its 4G communication standard without their approval.

It seems like after its semiconductor and smartphone business was declined by trade sanctions from the US. Huawei is hunting for new revenue generation with this patent licensing. Since it is on top, when it comes to 5G patents standard, simultaneously actively taking advantage of the same. Parallelly, Huawei is also hinted, in order to expand the royalty business which is based on its patent portfolio.
