Samsung promoting the reuse of sewage treatment water in Gyeonggi-do province Korea

Samsung strikes to boost its social relationships and signed a business agreement with the Ministry of Environment On 30th of November, 2022. The Gyeonggi-do province surrounds Seoul and is the most populous province in the country. Suwon, Yongin, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and Osan are 5 cities in the province where Samsung choose to put efforts. Samsung will be going to promote the reuse of sewage treatment water with Korea Water Resources Corporation and Korea Environment Corporation.

For the same concern, a signing ceremony was held in the presence of Samsung Electronics CEO and President Gyeonggi-Hyeon. The omen take place at the Samsung Electronics Semiconductor Hwaseong Campus on the same day. With the expansion of semiconductor lines, by 2030, the amount of industrial water required for Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor plant is expected to more than double.

Samsung’s New Environmental Management Strategy

In ‘New Environmental Management Strategy‘ Samsung Electronics announced that it would ‘zero increase in water intake‘ at its domestic semiconductor plants by 2030. It has been reviewing various ways to stably secure industrial water without increasing water intake.

Under this agreement, discharged water from public sewage treatment plants in Suwon, Yongin, Hwaseong, and Osan will be treated to the level of industrial water. Which is required by semiconductor plants and supplied to Samsung Electronics’ Giheung, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek plants.

Ultrapure water from the effluent:

In order to make ultrapure water through an additional process and used for semiconductor production from the effluent. All the liquid waste or sewage discharged is supplied to each business site. The amount of water that Samsung Electronics can receive is expected to reach about 474,000 tons per day or 173 million tons per year, as secured under the fresh agreement.

It is expected to contribute to solving the national water shortage problem by reusing effluent from public sewage treatment plants instead of taking additional water for industrial use from nature according to Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor line expansion.

Samsung Electronics Semiconductor additionally plans to continue various efforts to optimize water usage and reduce water intake. As replacing old facilities, improving manufacturing processes, and developing new technologies, to check the increase in water intake.

Gye-Hyeon Gyeong, CEO of the DS Division at Samsung Electronics convinced:

“Using sewage-reused water in the semiconductor industry, which requires ultra-pure water, is a major paradigm shift.” “We will work together.”
