Samsung will face decline while Sony’s share of the CIS market will rise next year

CIS is a system semiconductor that is responsible for converting the light entering through a lens into an electrical video signal.

Reportedly, Noh Geun-chang, the head of the Hyundai Motor Securities Research Centre, at the ‘Sensor Market and Technology Outlook Seminar’ which is conducted at the headquarters of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association in Pangyo, Gyeonggi.

“Technology is important, but I think the most important thing in the CMOS image sensor (CIS) market is the customer. Sony is recording a turnaround with the growth of the Apple flagship smartphone market. On the other hand, Samsung Electronics is in a situation where reverse growth is inevitable due to the limitations of its customers.”

Notably, CIS is a system semiconductor that is responsible for converting the light entering through a lens into an electrical video signal. Similar to the other image sensors, it comprises low power while actively applied to camera modules in smartphones. While its use is also widespread in multiple fields that include robots, autonomous driving, and augmented reality respectively. On the other hand, because of the economic downturn occurs this year. The smartphone market declined gradually and turn out to be a severe recession. And therefore, the CIS market is also depicting a lethargic performance.

“Smartphone demand is expected to bottom below 1.3 billion units this year and grow by 3% next year,” said Noh Geun-chang, director of the center, “As a result, the CIS market is expected to decline by 2% this year and grow by 5% to $20 billion next year.”

Whereas, out of global CIS makers comprise of Sony and Samsung Electronics. Sony’s performance is predicted to be outstanding.

“Sony’s performance is showing a better-than-expected trend due to strong smartphone sales from Apple, a major customer, strengthening the production system through collaboration with TSMC, and expanding the automotive CIS business,” said Noh Geun-chang, director of the center.

Also, Min Kyung-won is the chief of the Korea Electronics Research Institute of Technology. He gave a lecture on technology trends for Cameras and Systems for Autonomous Vehicles. As per him, the size of the autonomous vehicle market will grow from $2 billion in 2019 to $60 billion in 2030.

Moving further on the latest technology trend he conveys his thoughts by saying-

“Vehicle camera technology must accurately recognize precise shape information, distance, and travel speed regardless of the surrounding environment and conditions,” adding, “However, since there is no sensor that fits all these situations and needs, it will be necessary to overcome the existing limitations by fusing various sensors.”

While talking about the sensor market and technology outlook seminar. Then this is an event in order to share the latest image sensor technology development status and market trends of domestic sensor companies. Also, the presentations on topics in various domains such as 3D sensing cameras, CMOS image sensors, and autonomous driving cameras.
