Recently during SDC22 (Samsung Developer Conference 2022), Samsung demonstrated One UI 5.0 and new features for Bixby, Samsung Knox, SmartThings, and Tizen. After the commencement of this event, Samsung executives much about the company’s One UI 5.0 rollout plans. They also reveal their future plans for the upcoming version of One UI.
Hyesoon (Sally) Jeong, the VP at Samsung Electronics and in charge of One UI development. As per her, the company is looking forward to rolling out the stable version of One UI 5.0. This has been rolling to almost all of its compatible high-end smartphones by the end of this year.
Seamless Updates coming to Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI 6.0
Presently, Samsung phone lack Android Seamless Updates feature. It means whenever any update arrives, you’re locked out of your phone for the interval of 10-20 minutes during the update is installed. Sally also confirmed that Samsung is currently working on a Seamless Update for Galaxy phones and tablets. She also reveals that the same feature will roll out under the head of the One UI 6.0 update next year.
Google with its Android 13 made a mandate for smartphone makers to create virtual A/B partitions. Therefore, when a firmware update arrives, it will be installed in the background on a ROM partition that’s currently not being used. Thus it makes your phone reboot directly from the partition with the newest firmware, and it makes the update process seamless.
During her interview with Android Authority, Sally also talked about TouchWiz, Samsung Experience, and One UI. When asked whether Samsung could switch to a new software UI, Sally said, “I think One UI is here to stay at least as long as I am.” She has been with the South Korean tech giant for 25 years.
One UI isn’t coming to Chromebooks and Tizen OS smart TVs
Presently, One UI runs on Samsung’s smartphones, tablets and wearables. Some of its design elements are also used in the company’s laptops running Windows 11. Although, Sally ensures that One UI is not coming to its Chromebooks and TVs. She also mentioned that One UI will continue to appear different from stock Android UI.
A company executive said the company works closely with Google’s Android team, this way it contributes a lot to stock Android. Also, its multi-window and Galaxy theme features have been merged into stock Android over the past few years. Samsungs team have been working quite closely with Google since the time of its foldable phone launch.
Samsung’s longer software support
It is noticeable that in past few years Samsung has made tremendous changes in its software update support. And with time, its become even better than Google with respect to major of its updates, the company has released its mid-range and high-end smartphones.
Sally disclose that the South Korean tech giant has very efficient software development as well as testing processes. And that’s one of the primary reasons that it has been able to release major software updates to its wide range of phones very quickly.
