Samsung’s 4nm process and Exynos 5300 5G modem were used by Google’s Tensor G2 chipset

The new chipset has gone through lots of improvements being the successor of last year's Tensor processor.

Google unveiled its next-generation Pixel smartphone last week. These devices include Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro respectively. Notably, both of these smartphones were equipped with Samsung Foundry’s 4nm fabrication process and System LSI’s Exynos 5300 5G modem. Whereas, the all-new Google chipset has gone through lots of improvements being the successor of last year’s Tensor processor which was used in the Pixel 6 series. Also, it brings modest improvements in CPU and GPU performance.

Additionally, it has been unveiled by Google last week that its second-generation Tensor chipset focuses are more inclined towards AI performance and better security capabilities. Google VP Brian Rakowski revealed that the Tensor G2 has better voice processing proficiency. It offers rapid Google assistant queries, quicker voice translation, and enhanced voice typing which is 2.5x faster than using the Google keyboard. Additionally, it also helps users by visually describing the emojis, like asking for the “heart eyes cat.”

Tensor G2 features Samsung Foundry’s 4nm LPE fabrication process

Talking about the specifications, the Google Tensor G2 uses Samsung Foundry’s 4nm LPE. This comes as an upgrade over the last year’s 5nm LPE process. It is enriched with two ARM Cortex-X1 CPU cores clocked at 2.85GH, two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.35GHz. And four ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 1.8GHz. While it also uses ARM’s new-generation Mali-G710 GPU featured with seven cores for improved gaming and HDR. Additionally, it comes along with Google’s Titan M2 security chip and second-generation Edge TPU.

Coming to compatibility then it is compatible with LPDDR5 RAM. Altogether, it shared an L3 cache and 8MB of total system cache. Here credit goes to the improved ISP, it enables it now to record 4K 60fps videos from all the cameras. It can also support up to 108MP cameras with zero shutter lag. Other enhancements include the ability to unblur the photos including the older ones as well, portrait videos and Super-Res Zoom for images and videos.

Samsung’s Exynos 5300 5G modem

While the chipset also uses Samsung’s Exynos 5300 5G modem, the same was announced by Samsung during its Tech Day 2022 event last week. Although, no other details have been revealed with respect to the new modem. But at the same time, we can expect it to be more powerful and efficiently faster. It is worth recognising here that this is where the first generation Tensor chipset underperformed as it drained the battery faster. Other connectivity features include dual-frequency GPS, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and USB type-C 3.2 respectively.
