Samsung and QD-OLED the future of Smart TVs

The Quantum dot (QD) display as adapted by Samsung seems successfully received in the first tests and the model from Sony in particular (we bought the panel from Samsung Display) has won many awards. New screen technology, QD-OLED is a hybrid display technology that takes the elements of OLED and combines them with quantum dots.

Samsung has developed it intending to produce a display that keeps the benefits to the firm. As it increases the market being a leader in picture quality, ultimately, the production situation remains complex. Let some consider the situation while QD-OLED production increased.

QD-OLED production Lay on the table

South Korea is saying that at end of the year production is to be enhanced. (by 30 percent, currently, 30,000 units are being manufactured per month). This seems good from far, but the processor is complex. Must Samsung take all by consciously about how to proceed? The QD panel production is expensive as adopted by Samsung. It is because its yield is lower. The cost is estimated that needs to invest in the making of QD-OLED to be around 1.5 times that of an LG OLED display.

The plans for the OLED lineup from Samsung itself are decisive. Samsung Display cannot decide that alone. There South Korean company deciding whether to set up another line for the production of QD OLED panels.

Samsung and the OLED TVs

The decision-making is near the coast as Samsung is going to finalize the decision. It could be held by the end of the year, then two new sizes could be added in the next step. A 77-inch panel for smart TVs and a 49-inch panel for monitors. So far, the TVs are only 55 and 65 inches (8K is not planned for the time being) and the monitors are 32 inches.

Probably Samsung is going to pursue the strategy with 2 OLED panels: its own for the top model and an LG panel for cheaper models. The source said that LG has probably failed. Thus, the entire OLED lineup is on the ledge.

Meanwhile, Samsung continues to rely heavily on QLED, once with LCDs and once with mini-LEDs. Mini-LEDs in particular are now on the same level as OLEDs and cheaper. I would also ask myself whether the investment in QD-OLED is worthwhile and whether it is a good idea in the long term in competition with LG.
